Course description

This course is aimed at drivers of goods vehicles wishing to improve their knowledge of the different rules on drivers hours and working time, and to gain a level of proficiency in the operation of digital tachographs.

Objectives

The course objectives are to:

  • Cover the legislation for EU drivers including the rules on hours and working time
  • Cover the legislation for GB Domestic and AETR drivers including the rules on hours and working time
  • To enable drivers to make practical use of the digital tachograph including the use of the driver smartcard, working with UTC, making manual entries, taking printouts and recognizing common warning messages

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the driver should be able to:

  • Understand how the different rules on hours and working time affect their daily work
  • Recognise their responsibilities under the legislation
  • Make use of their driver smartcard and understand what actions they need to take if the card is lost, stolen or malfunctions
  • Use the controls of the digital tachograph including navigating through menu options, changing paper rolls, and carrying out simple vehicle unit security checks

Note

There are separate modules covering the Stoneridge, Siemens & Actia Digital Tachograph units and drivers should take care to choose the correct module for the type they will be using.

Assessment

Drivers will be invited to participate in a multiple choice quiz at the end of the course.

Certification

On completion of this course a certificate of attendance will be sent to the driver or their employer (if applicable), and their attendance will be recorded on the Driving Standards Agency database as required by the legislation governing the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence.
