First Aid

7 hours, classroom and practical based

Course description

This course is aimed at drivers of goods vehicles who wish to gain a valuable additional 'life skill' as part of their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence qualification. At the end of the course, drivers will be invited to undertake an optional practical assessment and written test which, on successful completion, will lead to an additional qualification of becoming an Appointed First Aid Person.

Objectives

The course objectives are to:

  • Orientate the driver to the initial assessment and management of pre-hospital emergencies
  • Enable the driver to provide the first aid skills to give immediate care
  • Give the driver the minimum level of training necessary to manage the casualty before more experienced help is available

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the driver should be able to:

  • Understand the principles of first aid
  • Provide effective management at an incident
  • Establish immediate care priorities
  • Initiate the primary care necessary within the first few minutes of a life threatening emergency

Assessment

Drivers will be invited to participate in a multiple choice quiz at the end of the course.

Drivers will also be invited to participate in a practical assessment and written test to achieve first aid certification.

Certification

On completion of this course a certificate of attendance will be sent to the driver or their employer (if applicable), and their attendance will be recorded on the Driving Standards Agency database as required by the legislation governing the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence.
